Rescue crews on Friday morning found the body of a man who went missing in Langley Pond on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Burnettown Police Department.

The body of Byron Alexander Coleman, 22, of Graniteville was found by rescue crews with the Department of Natural Resources between 7:30 and 8 a.m. on Friday, according to Chief David Paul Smith. The Burnettown Police Department, Aiken County Sheriff's Office and the Aiken County Coroner were contacted shortly after.

“They observed what they thought was possibly a body floating in the water that had surfaced,” Smith said. Further investigation, including contact with Coleman's family, revealed the body matched the description of Coleman.

The body has been sent to Newberry for an autopsy.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said the cause of death is drowning and no foul play is suspected.

The body was found near where divers and rescue crews had been searching since Wednesday afternoon.

“He was somewhere in the vicinity of 20 to 30 feet where they thought he would be,” Smith said.

The incident stems from an emergency call that was received at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday that three swimmers – two men and a woman – were in distress at Langley Pond.

One of the male swimmers was pulled from the water and transported to a hospital. The female swimmer reportedly followed him to the hospital. The three had been swimming in a no-swim area of the pond.
