Student earns perfect score on PASS
Many students would not think about school during the summer, but Mossy Creek Elementary School fourth grader Katie Beth Cannon had a reason to think about tests a little early this year.
She received a perfect score on her PASS writing test, a standardized set of testing that measures the performance of students compared to South Carolina’s academic standards.
“I was jumping around the house,” Cannon said. “I found out the week before school started.“
According to Cannon, her parents were very excited as well.
“My mom grabbed me and hugged me and daddy came and hugged me, too,” Cannon said.
She had a chance to enjoy the night after her academic success. Her favorite food is chocolate, but her parents had a more acceptable meal choice in mind.
“We had a little celebration dinner,” Cannon said. “We had tacos, which is my favorite dinner, and I got to stay up late.”
Cannon said that she did not expect to make a perfect score, but she is glad that she did so well.
“I couldn’t tell I would get a perfect score when I was taking the test,“ Cannon said. “I was really nervous.”
When she had the chance to share the news with her classmates, she said that they were happy for her accomplishment, and one of the reasons she did so well was her teacher.
“All of my friends congratulated me,“ Cannon said. “I’ve got the same teacher as last year, Ms. Spieker.”
Theresa Spieker was a third-grade teacher, but she now teaches fourth grade, so Cannon gets to keep the teacher she loves.
“She’s really fun, but she also knows how to discipline us well,” Cannon said. “She always told us to just use our imagination.”
She is involved in other activities as well, and said that keeping up with everything takes a lot of work.
“I do chorus and Girl Scouts, and I still keep up with my homework,” Cannon said. “I really like Girl Scouts and earning badges. My favorite badge to earn was the sleepover badge because we got to stay up and have fun.”
Cannon said that her parents always help her academically, and that she does enjoy writing, but has another love as well.
“My parents are there to make sure I do my homework and do well with school,” Cannon said “ Writing is one of my favorite subjects, but my favorite subject is reading.”
