Midland Valley (8-6, 4-2 Region 5-AAA) handed Gilbert (9-6, 5-1) its first region loss of the season on Thursday. After falling in the first game 11-25, the Mustangs bounced back to win the next two 25-19, 25-23 before dropping the fourth game 18-25. They took the decisive fifth game 15-12.
The Mustangs got a team-best 12 kills from Madilyn Reed, who also added three digs and a block, and Gracie Gunterhad 11 kills and 10 digs. Kourtney King chipped in eight kills and four blocks. Brittney Campbell set up much of the Mustang attack with 29 assists in the five-game match.
Midland Valley will host Swansea on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Schofield (7-0) stayed unbeaten with the 25-14, 25-0, 25-7 win.
Madison Jones picked up 15 aces and four digs, while Wallace Townsend and Brynne Berry had three kills each.
The Rams will host host North Augusta on Wednesday.
