The North Augusta Police Athletic League Boxing Club – or PAL – will host the S.C. Silver Gloves State Boxing Championship on Saturday.

The event, for boxers from ages 8 through 15, is a state championship that will allow winners to move to the regional and national level, according to Jo-Anne Newman of the PAL Boxing Club.

“This is a combined state championship with match bouts,” Newman said. “If a boxer wins state, they can advance to regional, then national competition.”

For safety reasons, there are more weight classes for kids, with one weight class for every five pounds.

“A lot of our participants will end up as unopposed champions, because of the weight classes for smaller kids,” Newman said. “We will have some bouts going on. I'm expecting a large turnout, maybe 40 boxers, and 10 to 20 bouts on the card.”

From the North Augusta PAL Boxing Club, Newman expects to have 15 fighters. Included in that 15 is the “Elite Team” of five who have boxed all over the country.

“We have an elite team – Tez'Waun Starlings, Rashiid Slater, Marquez Rouse, Kendrez Sapp and Deondre Rouse,” Newman said. “Tez'Waun is our superstar, but the team has traveled across the country and have won state titles. They're our best going into this event.”

Tickets for the S.C. Silver Gloves State Championship Boxing event are $10, and children six and younger can get in free. Weigh-ins begin at 10 a.m. and the boxing will begin at 3 p.m.

The North Augusta PAL Boxing Club is located at 3294 Augusta Road in Warrenville.
