On Nov. 8, 120 of Merriwether Elementary School’s fourth grade students honored veterans with song and recognition during a 45-minute program held in the cafeteria. Patricia Bowen, the music teacher, led the students in singing the national anthem, “Armed Forces Medley” and “God Bless the USA.”

Robert Williamson, the director of Missions at the Edgefield Baptist Association, spoke about his experience during the Vietnam War. Strom Thurmond High School’s NJROTC opened the program with the presentation of the flag while students read aloud about the meaning of the “Pledge of Allegiance” and the significance of items on the prisoners of war table. Veterans stood to be recognized as their branch of service’s hymn began.
