December library festivities

  • Thursday, December 5, 2013

It’s going to be a busy month at the Nancy Carson Library in December. Make your plans early for our exciting programs. We started off December with our Early Release Movie on Dec. 4. This month we showed Disney’s Planes. A movie is shown every month on Aiken County’s early release day. Bring your own refreshments, and enjoy a free movie on our big screen.

We are lucky to have a very special guest, Mrs. Claus, visiting the library. On Wednesday, instead of our regularly scheduled storytimes, we invite children of all ages to come to Storytime with Mrs. Claus at 10:30 a.m. If you can’t make it Wednesday, we will have an evening Storytime with Mrs. Claus on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. Bring your cameras for a great holiday picture opportunity.

We continue our Reading to Rover program this month, and will be expanding the program starting in January. On Dec. 18, children from kindergarten to fifth grade, who have signed up at the front desk will be able to read to Trigger, the springer spaniel or Tim, the great Pyrenees. Permission slips must be signed so make sure to come in early to reserve your child’s time slot.

Throughout this month, we are running a short story-writing contest for adults ages 18 and up. Write a story using 150 words or less, centered around Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, and submit it at the front desk. Stories must be typed and double spaced. No handwritten entries will be accepted. The deadline for entries is 6 p.m. on Dec. 16. Prizes will be presented at a special Christmas program on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.

We are also holding our annual All Aboard the Christmas Express. This is a holiday storytime that will include famous stories like Chris Van Allsburg’s “The Polar Express” and fun Christmas carols. All of this will take place on Dec. 20 at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Lastly, we have our monthly LEGO Club on Dec. 27 at 4 p.m. We have had a great turnout but would love for any new kindergarten through fifth-graders who love LEGOs to join us. This is free to attend, and you do not have to sign up.

Don’t forget, throughout the month of December you can purchase a book from our Angel Tree for $20. Your $20 buys the book, and we place a book plate inside with a dedication to a loved one of your choosing. You can also pick up a gift card with your donation to let them know about your gift.

Remember, the Nancy Carson Library and all ABBE Libraries will be closed on Dec. 24, Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. We will also close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31. Make your plans now for your Christmas book and DVD runs.
