Fox Creek High School was selected as the site of a statewide recruiting evaluation combine.
The combine, which is a part of the College Road Trip presented by Sleeper Recruit, is billed as an event “where the unrecognized get recognized,” according to promotional material.
“The main purpose of the evaluation event is to get kids recruited to Division I, Division II and 1AA colleges,” CoCo Hillary, athletic director of Sleeper Recruit Performance, said. “The kids at the combine on Feb. 15 at Fox Creek will be in the pool to go on the College Road Trip, which is from June 7 through 11.”
Hillary, a former Strom Thurmond High School and Appalachian State University standout, said the tour will go to a number of ACC and SEC schools over the summer.
“We don’t have a finalized list of the schools we’ll be attending, but it will be five stops at ACC and SEC schools for summer camps,” he said. “The kids will be selected based on their performance at the combine.”
Fox Creek High School is the host school for the regional combine for a number of factors, including the facilities, according to Hillary.
“Fox Creek is not too far from where I grew up,” he said. “I know (Assistant) Principal (Andre) Baskett and he’s been a big help for us. Fox Creek has been a good partner, they have great facilities and Coach (Russ) Schneider has helped us a lot. He told us he would do whatever it takes to help us out, and he’s done a great job with advertising for us.”
Sleeper Recruit founder Rodney Tillman and Hillary started the College Road Trip to help students in the CSRA play football at the next level.
“We all have a common goal and common ground to stand on,” Hillary said. “We want to get kids to the next level to play football. There’s money out there for these guys to play.”
The College Road Trip combine is open to young men that are freshmen, sophomores and juniors in high school.
“It’s open to any player from ninth to 11th grade,” Hillary said. “We’ve done a tour of South Carolina to take to coaches and get the information out there. We’ve asked them to pass the information to any students they think can play at the next level and just need more exposure.”
Schneider said Hillary was looking for a location for the combine and it was a “no-brainer” for Fox Creek to host the event.
“CoCo came to us and asked if this event was something we wanted to do,” Schneider said. “It was a no-brainer for us. Anytime somebody in the community needs a facility, we welcome that. We like to open our facilities up, we’re here for the community. A lot of us knew of CoCo’s play around here (at Strom Thurmond) and in college, so it was cool to be able to help him out.”
The Sleeper Recruit College Road Trip combine will be held at Fox Creek High School, 165 Shortcut Road, at 11 a.m. on Feb. 15. For more information, or to sign up for the event, call 855-814-9990.
