Head coach Wesley Brown was looking for his Predators to have a first start. They gave him just that against Barnwell in the Mustang Invitational.

The Predators had a four-run third inning and cruised to a 5-0 win over the Warhorses. Dalton Swires picked up the win in the season opener, and led a one-hit shutout. He combined with Brett Butler, Mitchell Walters and Jesse Chavous to complete the job with the lone hit coming in the fifth inning.

Leadoff man Terrance Hillary went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Deondre Baskett went 2-for-3. Roby Gillespie and Brett Sitton both had the other Predator RBIs (the other runs were unearned).

“Pitching did really well, that’s something we have been struggling with for the last few weeks,” Brown said. “The hitting took the place of where the pitching has been. We have to capitalize on opportunities a bit more. The top of the lineup, other than Terrance, didn’t really come through like they had been coming through in our scrimmages. We’ll get it fixed; this was just the first real game and there were some nerves, I’m sure. Hopefully in the next couple of days we’ll get that taken care of.”

The Fox Creek defense was “solid” according to Brown.

“We had one error on paper, and that’s definitely an improvement from where we’ve had four or five every game,” he said. “We’re on the right path. I’d rather be struggling now than in late April.”

Fox Creek’s next scheduled game is Tuesday night against Silver Bluff at 7:30 p.m. The team’s biggest matchup in the tournament will be against area rival Strom Thurmond at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Depending on where the team places they could play at 1, 3:30 or 6 p.m. on Saturday, as they look to defend their tournament crown from last year. All games will be at Midland Valley High School.
