North Augusta will be collaborating with Major League Baseball in offering local youths a chance to compete during this year's MLB All Star Game ceremonies in Minnesota.

The MLB's Pitch, Hit & Run is an official skills competition and has been going on for years; however, this will be North Augusta's first time signing up for it.

The event adds up scores for contestants in three different categories: pitching, hitting for distance and running for time.

Boys and girls will compete in three levels of competition with each one getting them closer to the fourth level at the All-Star Game.

The first event will be held locally at the NAHS baseball field at 100 Riverview Park Drive. The event is scheduled for March 22 and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 4-14 are invited and ages 7-14 have a chance to advance. The event is free and participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and have a parent or guardian fill out a registration form.

Jeff Williamson, from the City's Park and Recreation, said age divisions for advancement are: Seven and Eight, Nine and Ten, Eleven and Twelve and Thirteen and Fourteen.

The winners of the local contest will advance to Sectionals which will likely be held in Augusta from mid-May to early June. After that, winners will compete in the Team Competition which runs through the entire month of June at one of the 30 MLB ball parks.

Finally, the winners of that contest will go on to compete during the MLB All-Star game activities scheduled for July 14 through 16 at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins.

“It'll be a great event and is something we know our kids can look forward to,” Williamson said. “We thought it would be a great addition to all our local activities.”

Volunteers during Saturday's event include the NAHS Baseball team and North Augusta Lions Club. For more information, call 803-441-4311.
