An Aiken teenager was charged in a Sunday collision that resulted in a vehicle crashing through the gate of the AGY plant, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The collision happened at about 7 p.m. on Sunday on U.S. Highway 78, according to Lance Cpl. Judd Jones, a spokesman for the Highway Patrol. A 2011 Jeep Wrangler, driven by 17-year-old William Wertz of Aiken, was traveling east on U.S. Highway 78 when Wertz tried to pass an eastbound Honda.
Jones said the Jeep sideswiped the Honda, causing the Jeep to run off the roadway to the left. The Jeep struck a ditch and crashed through the security gate of the AGY plant before striking some materials inside the gate.
The driver of the Honda pulled off onto the shoulder, Jones said. There were no injuries, and both drivers were wearing their seat belts.
Wertz was charged with driving too fast for conditions.
