Paul Brewer has had racing in his blood for as long as he can remember.
The North Augusta native has been participating in different racing events for over a decade, and is enjoying spending weekends this summer competing.
This past weekend, Brewer competed in the Carolina Cup Pro Series race at Road Atlanta, and came out on top on Saturday and Sunday. The race had one individual race on Saturday, and one individual race on Sunday, and Brewer finished in first place for both. Not only did he finish in first, but he set a new lap record on Saturday on the 2˝ mile road course located just east of Gainesville, Georgia. The Carolina Cup Series is sanctioned by the Carolina Region of the Sports Car Club of America.
Winning is not new to Brewer, as he had found success in multiple races through the years.
“I got back into racing in 1999, and I have won seven Atlanta region championships in my class since ’99,” he said.
Brewer competed in his Nissan, and he spoke on the multiple different cars that were a part of the race.
“I go up against all kinds of different cars, and it is the Sports Car Club of America so it is Porsches, Mazdas, etc.,” he said. “It is pretty cool to see all the varieties of sports cars that people have raced with over the years.”
Racing has been a part of Brewer for quite some time, and he enjoys having it as his hobby now.
“I remember watching racing when I was little with my father because he was a big fan of racing, so racing has been something I have really enjoyed since I was a young boy,” he said. “It is like my golf; a lot of guys go and play golf on the weekends with their friends, while I race with some friends.”
Brewer competes with Team Twenty Racing a group that he and a couple of guys are apart of.
“There are a couple of guys along with myself that race for Team Twenty Racing, and we each have our own equipment but we race together as a team for Team Twenty Racing,” he commented.
The races Brewer usually competes in are part of the Carolina Cup Pro Series, and Brewer shared briefly on the foundation behind it.
“In the Sports Car Club of America there are different touring series, and the Carolina Cup Series is one of those,” he said. “It is basically the same bunch of guys that run under the Carolina Cup banner at various racetracks among the Southeast.”
Brewer still has a whole lot more racing under his belt; and he plans to race in a few more races this year, including a race coming up in Charlotte sometime in August. Also, another race in Atlanta during the last weekend in October. All in all, Brewer doesn’t care fully on the wins and the losses, but more on the fun and experiences he gets from racing.
“It is just great fun, and it is certainly close enough to North Augusta for people to zip up there and take a look. It is a hobby that I enjoy, and it keeps one’s ability to understand vehicle dynamics at the forefront,” he said.
