An Aiken woman was sexually assaulted outside her apartment late on Wednesday, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
The incident happened at about 11:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on York Street, according to an incident report. The victim’s boyfriend told officers he left his girlfriend at the apartment while he went to the store, and upon his return, she told him she had been sexually assaulted, according to police reports.
The victim, who is in her 20s, told police she was trying to catch up with her boyfriend when she approached a man outside the apartment who was dressed similarly to her boyfriend, police said. When she realized it wasn’t her boyfriend, she began to go back down a pathway in the rear of the apartments when the suspect grabbed her from behind and sexually assaulted her, according to the report.
The victim said she returned to her apartment, discarded her clothing and took a bath, police said. Officers found blood on the bathroom sink and in the victim’s underwear. The victim was taken to Aiken Regional Medical Centers for treatment and a sexual assault kit, according to the report.
