Iva police chief resigns following arrest

IVA, S.C. (AP) — The police chief of an Anderson County town has resigned after being arrested on criminal domestic violence charges.

Town attorney Mary McCormac and Councilman Kenneth Norwood say Iva Police Chief Tommy Miller submitted his resignation Saturday.

Miller was suspended a week earlier after he was charged with criminal domestic violence and third-degree assault. Warrants accuse the 39-year-old chief of repeatedly striking his 14-year-old son with a piece of wood and attempting to harm his wife by grabbing and throwing her.

Miller has been released on bond, and court records list no attorney for him. Capt. Jason Hawkins has been serving as interim chief since Miller's suspension.

Iva has about 1,200 residents. Miller had served as its police chief since 2007.

Whale euthanized after shark attack on Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a whale that was attacked by a shark had to be put to death after it washed ashore on Hilton Head Island.

The shark sighting Saturday afternoon also closed the beach for a half-hour.

Shore Beach Services told The Island Packet of Hilton Head (http://bit.ly/UUOuHn) that the lifeguard saw the whale being attacked around 3 p.m. Saturday, then saw the Pygmy sperm whale wash ashore.

Beach services operations manager Mike Wagner says a veterinarian was called, but the whale could not be saved and was euthanized.

Lifeguards cleared the ocean for 30 minutes, but the shark was not seen again.
