A Gloverville man was detained after chasing another man with a stick and striking him, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
Robert Kinney, 55, of Alley Street, was charged with disorderly conduct and third-degree assault and battery. He was placed in the Aiken County detention center, where he remained on Friday morning.
Officers were called to Hackney Street at about 3:50 p.m. Thursday, according to a sheriff’s incident report. The 54-year-old victim told officers he and Kinney were involved in a verbal altercation when Kinney “armed himself” with a very large stick and began chasing him up the roadway, trying to strike him with the stick.
The victim said Kinney finally made contact, striking him in the leg, police said. Kinney was still swinging the stick at the victim when officers arrived.
Kinney told officers the victim pulled a knife on him first, which is why he grabbed the stick, the report stated. Officers wrote that Kinney smelled of alcohol and exhibited signs of intoxication. Multiple witnesses told officers that the victim did not have a knife, and that Kinney just attacked him, the report said.
