A local organization is one of many that is looking to help kids make the upcoming school year a successful one.
True to Your S.O.L.E., a group formed by Denzell Washington and Marcus Schoultz, is having its annual back-to-school giveaway on Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, located at 224 Barnwell Ave. N.W.
The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include food, a giveaway of school supplies and 100 book bags to the first 100 children who attend. While all children are invited, he added that the event caters to students from 4-K to eighth grade.
Washington said supplies are first come, first served while they are available. In addition to the school supplies, there will be fun and games for the kids and new pairs of shoes will be raffled off at the event.
The giveaway will also feature several guest speakers, including Carl White, the principal of Midland Valley High School.
Washington said he and Schoultz came up with True to Your S.O.L.E. because they both love sneakers. Over time, he and Schoultz viewed their group as a way to give back.
“That new pair of shoes was important to us when we were kids, and we want to make sure the kids coming up today have a taste of that experience,” he added. “It’s just our way of helping our kids start the school year off the right way.”
