DREHER 48 FOX CREEK 6
NORTH AUGUSTA — Donovan Ward was ready to start the regular season.
The senior running back for Dreher scored early and often for the Blue Devils, amassing 132 yards and four touchdowns on the night.
“He’s a good back, but the offensive line did a good job, too,” Treigh Sulluvan, Dreher’s head coach, said. “We did enough with the quarterback to keep them honest, too. It was a good job by the entire run game, when the quarterback ran it and Donovan – he’s a good player.”
The game got off to a fast start for the Blue Devils (1-0) when Anthony Salters took the opening kickoff 88 yards to put Dreher up 7-0. The Blue Devels went on to add three more touchdowns in the first quarter, two on runs by Ward and one on a pass from Avery Armstrong to Chris Cooke, to end the quarter with a 28-0 lead.
“They got off to a fast start; we made some early mistakes that you would expect from a young team,” Russ Schneider, Fox Creek’s head coach, said. “Most of these guys hadn’t started in a football game before. In the past, when we would get down like that heads would start dropping, people would start asking to come out. Not this group; guys were begging to come in and play.”
Before halftime, Dreher added 13 more points to take a 41-0 lead into the break.
“We did a pretty good job at the line of scrimmage. I thought our offensive line was giving some push up there and created some holes for our backs,” Sullivan said of his offense. “Our backs did a good job of taking what was there; they were kind of trying to get us to run.”
For Schneider and the Predators (0-1), the loss doesn’t hurt the playoff picture.
“I can’t say anything negative from this game. We played hard, didn’t have any big injuries and got our three points for the playoff picture,” he said. “We can move the football, and we missed a lot of tackles. We’ve got to wrap up. A lot of that comes from when you’re tired – we’re playing both ways.”
Fox Creek will work on special teams, which cost them with field position and the big touchdown return, during its coming week off.
“I haven’t kicked the ball deep since my first year 10 years ago,” Schneider said of the decision to kick the ball to Salters. “I decided this year to try it again – first play, they house it. I’ll never kick the ball deep in my career again.”
Fox Creek will be off next week and will return to action on Sept. 5 when they play at Augusta Christian in the annual “Battle for the Paddle.”
