Week Zero has come and gone, and it didn’t go very well for a lot of area teams.
Of the six teams in action, only two came away with victories, and the four losing teams scored a combined 22 points.
That left the pool of Game Ball candidates fairly shallow, but there were certainly worthy performances.
Tyree Stidem, QB Strom Thurmond
In his first game starting behind center for the Rebels, Stidem ran for 60 yards and both Strom Thurmond touchdowns in a 17-10 win over Aiken. He also completed 7 of 13 passes for 150 more yards.
Bryson Jones, QB Aiken
Even in a loss, Jones helped show what this year’s Aiken team is capable of doing. He ran for 22 yards and added 105 passing yards with a touchdown toss to Antawn Chandler.
Blake Busby, K North Augusta
For a team known for its offense, North Augusta beat Lakeside 12-10 thanks to a couple special teams plays, specifically by Busby. He made field goals of 34 and 38 yards, the latter as time expired to make up for a missed PAT.
Chaz Mealer, WR North Augusta
In a prolific passing offense like North Augusta’s, one receiver often distinguishes himself as the “go-to guy.” Mealer emerged as an early front-runner on Friday with 12 catches for 114 yards.
