A 3-year-old girl died early on Tuesday after being struck by a golf cart in the parking lot of Aiken Regional Medical Centers on Monday, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
The child, who was from Graniteville and has not been identified, was pronounced dead at Georgia Regents Medical Center’s Pediatric Unit at 6:52 a.m. Tuesday, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning in Newberry.
Police responded to a golf cart versus pedestrian collision that happened in the parking lot in front of Aiken Regional at about 1:30 p.m. Monday. Carlton said the girl and her family were exiting the hospital toward the parking lot when the collision occurred.
The girl was taken to the emergency department in Aiken Regional and then airlifted to Georgia Regents Medical Center, Carlton said. Officials have said the driver is a security officer at Aiken Regional.
Aiken Public Safety’s collision reconstruction team is conducting an investigation, which could include speed determination, scale diagrams or collection of data for reconstruction.
The hospital released the following statement on Tuesday: “All of us at Aiken Regional are deeply saddened by the death of Kirsten. Our condolences go out to the family during this incredible time of sorrow. We will continue to keep the family in our prayers.”
