CLINTON (AP) — Authorities say an 84-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder because he intentionally rammed his car into an assisted living home in Clinton.
Clinton Public Safety Director Robin Morse told local news media outlets that he consulted with prosecutors before filing the serious felony charges against Alton Payton.
Investigators said Payton rammed his car through the doors at Bailey Manor assisted living home Wednesday and ended up in the lobby. A portable gas can in the car caught fire and several people suffered smoke inhalation.
Authorities estimated the crash did $500,000 of damage to the home. All 40 residents had to evacuate because of the damage.
Payton is being held in jail as he awaits a bond hearing. His family says he is suffering from dementia.
