Blythewood knocked off Aiken (4-2) by scores of 26-24, 25-18, 21-25 on Thursday.
Hornet head coach Malynda Young said her team may have been out-matched by the bigger school – Blythewood is a solid Class AAAA squad while Aiken plays at Class AAA – but felt the match would help Aiken in the long run.
“They’re kind of loaded this year,” Young said.
Carly Bland led the Hornets with 11 kills and also added six digs, while Abi Stewart had seven kills and Alyssa Frazier had five with a team-high five blocks. Taylor Mabry led the team with 15 digs, as Maggie West added 11 with 25 assists. Hannah Mitchell had 10 digs, and eighth-grader Chloe Neeley picked up a block.
On Tuesday, Aiken beat Greenbrier 25-21, 25-18, 25-23. Frazier had seven kills and three digs, and Mabry had 14 digs and an ace.
Aiken will next head to North Augusta on Tuesday for a tri-match against the Yellow Jackets and Lakeside before facing rival South Aiken on Thursday.
Pelion ruined Ridge Spring-Monetta’s season opener by winning 21-25, 26-24, 26-24, 26-24.
Raven Valentine led the Trojans’ efforts with seven aces, nine blocks, 14 kills and nine digs.
Amber Merritt had 14 assists for the Trojans, who will travel to play Region 4-A foe Hunter-Kinard-Tyler on Tuesday.
