COLUMBIA ó World War II veterans of the Battle of the Bulge are scheduled to meet in the Columbia area as well as tour Fort Jackson and a museum.

The tour begins Sunday and continues through Sept. 3.

Participants are slated to visit the Armyís largest training base at Fort Jackson s well as the newly-renovated state museum and its large collection of military artifacts.

The Battle of the Bulge stretched from mid-December 1944 through late January 1945. It was fought during one of the coldest winters ever recorded in Europe. Adolf Hitlerís troops attacked the Allies in order to prevent U.S. and British forces from pushing into Germany, but failed.

More than 600,000 Allied troops faced off against 500,000 Germans in Belgium, France and Luxembourg. More than 19,000 U.S. soldiers died.
