North Augusta High School will be looking for a new head football coach.

Brian Thomas is no longer in the position after six seasons with the Yellow Jackets, according to an Aiken County Public School District official. Thomas, who is also the school's athletic director and reportedly plans to stay in that role, led the team to a 49-23 record during his tenure.

Thomas is still an employee of the school district, the official said.

A representative of the football team noted that Thomas met with Yellow Jacket coaches Monday afternoon to announce his plans, and met with players Tuesday morning to share the news with them as well.

"He's a good coach and a better man," said another athletic booster. Several people involved with the team reported being completely surprised by the news when it came to light Tuesday through various outlets.

Thomas got on board with North Augusta in March of 2014, replacing Dan Pippin, who was moving a few miles north to become Greenwood High School's football coach and athletic director.

Prior to his time at North Augusta, Thomas coached at Northern Guilford High School in Greensboro, N.C., where he was the defensive coordinator for a squad that won three straight state titles. He also became that team's head coach and led it to a second-place finish in the state.
