The Augusta GreenJackets' Saturday game – a 5-4 win over the Columbia Fireflies – provided some suspense in SRP Park, but the highlight for at least one fan came after the nine innings were complete, as local resident William Burt bagged a crimson 2019 Nissan Sentra in a raffle sponsored by Murphy Auto Group.
Burt, who lives in Barclay Estates with his wife, Victoria, came down to the field after the game as one of five finalists for the prize, and the key that he selected from among five options turned out to be the one that started the car.
Burt, the head maintenance man for the Petersburg Square and Forest Hills Racquet Club apartment complexes, in Augusta, registered for the contest just prior to Saturday's game and expressed thanks to God for the welcome surprise.
He said he attends GreenJackets games "once in a while," as his schedule will allow, considering the fact that he is on call for apartment residents' needs as relayed by his employer, ATC Development. "We make the residents happy," he confirmed.
The GreenJackets, in recent weeks, have given fans plenty of reasons to smile as a top team in the South Atlantic League. Saturday's win boosted the team's overall record to 75-61 and the second-half mark to 39-29. The following day, on Sunday, the GreenJackets secured their first trip to the playoffs since 2013 with a 3-2 win over the Fireflies.
