Football season is finally here for North Augusta, while Fox Creek will have to wait one more week.
The Yellow Jackets, fresh off a second consecutive Region 5-AAAA championship, open the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Georgia Class AAAA opponent Thomson.
The traditional powers met last season in a highly-anticipated matchup, and North Augusta scored the game's first 18 points in a 32-24 win.
There will be some new faces in this year's game, held at The Brickyard in Thomson, particularly at the quarterback position. The Jackets' Tanner White and Bulldogs' Damekus Taylor were both seniors last year, but new North Augusta starting quarterback Bradley Godwin had a huge impact in last year's game – he ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
Running back Jacari Buckson is back to lead the rushing attack, and last year's breakout season began with a 167-yard performance against Thomson.
The Yellow Jackets posted a 10-0 win over Williston-Elko on Friday in the Aiken County Scrimmage at South Aiken High School. Stephen Henry and Terry Richburg each intercepted passes off of tipped balls, Drew Stevens kicked a 25-yard field goal, and Austin Harrell and Jacarri Gamble hooked up for a 60-yard touchdown.
Fox Creek has to wait another week to begin football season. The Predators have a first-week bye, but that doesn't mean they won't be hitting the field this week. Fox Creek is hosting a free intersquad scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. They open the regular season Aug. 30 at home against Wagener-Salley.
