Grace United Methodist Church played host, July 13-20, to its annual Salkehatchie Summer Service camp, providing a base for teenagers and adult leaders to use in their home-repair ministry around the western half of Aiken County. This year's focus was on one home in Aiken, one in Beech Island and two (next-door neighbors) in Jackson. Emphasis is on providing free help — labor and material — with major problems involving such areas as roofing, flooring, painting, electricity and plumbing, with the idea of helping residents be "warm, safe and dry." Most of the volunteers came from either Dillon or the area of Soperton (near Dublin), Georgia. More than 3,000 "campers," spread among 46 communities, were on board for the statewide ministry this summer.
