A look at the ministry of Jesus shortly before the first Easter shows that he knew that powerful forces increasingly opposed him. He had become very popular among the people and certain religious leaders felt threatened by this man who challenged the status quo. Jesus took his disciples and briefly withdrew to a wilderness area during this time. Then they went to Jerusalem and the events of Palm Sunday and Holy Week occurred. This preparation time must have helped to prepare and strengthen the hearts of his disciples. “Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the people of Judea.” (John 11:54a)
