As we sang “I’m pressing on the upward way, new heights I’m gaining every day; still praying as I’m onward bound, Lord, plant my feet on higher ground,” I remembered my childhood church where we sang this hymn. These lyrics, written in 1898 by Joseph Oatman, Jr., were inspired by a letter the Apostle Paul wrote while imprisoned for preaching the Gospel. This epistle of joy teaches the forward look including forgetting about things behind and reaching out for things ahead. “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14).
