When Beetle Bailey asked Rocky, “How ya doing?” he responded with a litany of complaints ranging from backache to headache. Beetle, apparently overwhelmed, replied, “Most people just say ‘fine.’” We tell others we are fine as a way to show politeness and sometimes to keep our “social” distance. If we routinely stop to share all of our concerns in social settings, we might find others avoiding us. Mental health professionals tell us, however, that buried emotions tend to surface in other ways if we do not express them. Talking about feelings promotes healing: “for I am the Lord, who heals you” (Exodus 15:26b).
