I love summer rainstorms. I delight in walking outside during a storm and smelling the scent of cold rain hitting the hot pavement. The smell of rain is known to reduce stress and anxiety and boost your mood.
As someone who often spends my time indoors in an office, it brings me joy to open the blinds or curtains, even the doors, to experience the smell of clean air that creates peace within my soul. I feel complete peace sitting in bed and reading a book during a rainstorm.
Rain is a symbol often used in the Bible as a blessing from God. Rain allows crops to grow. It also shows God’s power as only he can withhold it and send it upon us.
Rain allows the Earth to be replenished. It does the same thing to our souls. It creates an interruption in our busy lives, as we physically don't move as fast when it's raining. This element from God forces us to pause and be patient.
James 5:7 says, “Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.”
In this chapter, James encourages believers to be patient in suffering because we understand that God is coming. He is our hope. He is full of compassion and mercy for us even when we think we can’t handle our sufferings any longer. God reminds us to press on and to trust that he is coming, just as he always brings the rain for the harvest.
The rain reminds me that God’s timing is perfect. Just as he commands every element of the Earth, we can trust that the rain is coming to remind us that his promises can be trusted.
