North Augusta freshman Katelyn Cochran threw a no-hitter in the Yellow Jackets' District V championship victory over Lakewood.

North Augusta High School's softball team took another forward step in postseason play Wednesday afternoon, defeating Lakewood 4-0 in Riverview Park, on the strength of a no-hitter by freshman standout Katelyn Cochran.

The win clinched the District V championship for North Augusta and ensures a spot in the Class AAAA Lower State Tournament. The Yellow Jackets have now won 14 consecutive games.

The Yellow Jackets, ranked second in the state, improved their record to 24-2, and the Gators wrapped up their 2019 campaign at 15-7. The win means North Augusta's next appointment will be Friday at 6 p.m. at home versus Hartsville (25-0), the state's top-ranked team.

Wednesday's contest was "at least" Cochran's second no-hitter of the season, said Craig Gilstrap, the Jackets' coach. His squad, on the strength of three hits, racked up three runs in the third and one in the sixth, and the Gators wound up with two errors. Gilstrap's bunch had zero errors.

Emily Ayers, Annabel Hurst and Emma Shiver each had a hit, and Ayers and Shiver each drove in a run.

Cochran, who administered 14 strikeouts, is 19-0. Her counterpart, Cathryn Fowler, wrapped up her season at 10-3.
