This year's homecoming game at North Augusta High School came down to the final second and the leg of Airport's Haden Rimer. Airport's placekicker hit an 18-yard field goal as time expired, securing a wild 30-29 win Friday over the Yellow Jackets.
The Eagles, after a 17-9 halftime lead, traded turnovers and the lead, as each team wound up with two interceptions and the Jackets were especially plagued by fumbles. They had six and lost four, including one on a fourth-quarter drop that bounced into Airport's end zone for a touchback.
North Augusta had the game's leading rusher: Cole Saggus, with 12 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Bradley Godwin ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, hitting Kortez Jones from 20 yards out to give North Augusta a 29-20 lead with 8:20 left in the fourth quarter.
Saggus, Godwin, Jones and their teammates, with a 2-5 overall record and a tally of 0-2 in Region 5-AAAA, will now play host to South Aiken (1-6, 1-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. Airport (5-2, 2-0) is tied with Brookland-Cayce atop the region. South Aiken's most recent game was a 35-20 loss Friday at Brookland-Cayce.
